Prefects 1962 So that's 60 years gone by. What a fine looking bunch we were! And possibly still are?

Peter [H] unmistakable by your stature. I think 6 foot 4 at the time? Many other listers are on - but you probably all have your own copies? If not, how many can you name? I think I can name 25, but may recall the others if prodded. How many have passed away? (I only know of Greg Norwood, sadly)  [Steve Tanner 2022-10-23 12:34:29]

I can’t remember the name of guy between Charlie Malbon and John Bowskill but I’ve got all the rest, except between Clive Fox and Roger Bishop.

It looks like Merv Platford, but I thought he might have died before that. Someone will know.

Also Ian Briggs died some years ago, and Mike Ball, but he isn’t on the photo. Thanks again. [Peter Holdsworth 2022-10-23 12:38:52]

Yes, the guy between Clive Fox and Roger Bishop is Merv Platford. Couldn't find his death on the UK GRO, but a family history website says he died on 23/5/1996 in San Francisco, so that explains it. Like you, I can't name the guy between Charlie Malbon and John Bowskill, a quiet, civilised chap... perhaps that's why the name escapes us.

Not sure about the one between Ian Briggs and Trevor Randall - was he Moseley?

Also can't name the guy with glasses on the right end of the front row, next to Ken Gilman - though I can recall his voice - in fact that's a weird thing isn't it... being able to recall voices. Strange what a dustbin of cluttered up sensory memories the 77-year old brain is.....  [Steve Tanner 2022-10-23 12:41:54]

Next to Ian Briggs is Mosley, without an e I reckon, but pronounced Moseley. Was he David?

I couldn’t remember when Merv died and thought it could have been while we were still at school. That must have been just Jeff Squire then.

Trevor Randall now likes to be called Tom according to Facebook. The chap at the end is Alan Smith.

ps. Never achieved 6’4”, only 6’3” but now about 6’2” I reckon.  [Peter Holdsworth 2022-10-23 12:46:25]

Hello Peter and others

I think everybody in the Perfects 62 pic can be identified from information already on www.oldretfordians.org.uk. I am second from the left, front row in between Eric Wright and Peter Thompson.

For information, Look for "pupil lists" and the one you want is the 1961 list which covers 1961/62. Then look for "prefects". A copy is attached.

Also in the John Palmer Archive, look for "admissions 1950-60". This has more detailed information, such as date of entry, and date of leaving. However a lot of pages are missing. I don't know if they can be found?

On the Prefects 62 pic, you won't find Jeffrey Squire, Philip Towler or Harry Payne as they left in 1961.

Jeffrey Squire was killed in a car accident aged 20 in 1964 in Edinburgh, where he was studying medicine. I think he is buried in Carlton in Lindrick churchyard?

He was a good friend of mine. He had a MGB sports car and I went on several car trips with him. Not much safety equipment in cars back then though.

I remember Merv Platford lived life at a faster pace than the rest of us. eg he was into smoking, drinking etc. [Jonty 2022-10-23 12:52:30]

Merv went over to the USA and I think he was working in the oil industry. I heard that he had a relationship with a lady who was very affluent over there but that he died of cancer at quite a young age. [Les Beldham 2022-10-23 12:55:40]
